Contour Grading & Retaining Walls
When we look at a potential landscaping project, we pay special attention to creating proper foundational grading, understanding the necessity of controlling water flow to stop erosion and send rain water away from your and your neighbors' houses. We use retaining walls when necessary, but are often able to use grading, our own red clay and boulders to create berms to control the water and stop erosion. This is the foundation of a good landscape design. We look at the total picture before making any recommendations about your landscape, listening carefully to you every step of the way.
The builder had left this new home-owner with a real erosion problem and no usable back yard. We graded the back yard to create different levels, and used natural dry-stack Tennessee Field Stone for the retaining walls. The patio is dry-set Crab Orchard flagstone with Zoysia grass planted in the joints. What a transformation! They now LOVE their yard.

Look how we took a three story steep drop off and turned it into a usable landscape! Erosion control was only one of the reasons we were brought in - they had no backyard! When the Angel Landscape Designs crew was through grading and installing retaining walls, this customer had decorative walkways and steps, planting areas, Zen garden meditation area and a beautiful back yard complete with fencing.
This customer also found that their builder's solution to erosion control at their new house did not work. Angel Landscape Designs changed a serious drainage problem on the most visible side of the house from a muddy drain-off to a landscaped resort! The Angel Landscape Designs crew used Tennessee Field Stone to make dry-set retaining walls, ledger step, stone pathways and even a waterfall to make the new terraces so inviting it is hard to go back inside! This landscape gets accolades from all of their friends.
In this case, we used both proper grading and retaining walls to make the side of a mountain into an elegant and usable landscape, complete with retaining walls, stone steps, a waterfall water feature, terraced levels, planting areas, a deck and stone patio. This landscape has had time to mature. The customer was so happy with the landscaping that she called us back to reclaim more of the mountain with stairs and an arbor pictured below:

No other landscaper would touch this back yard - it appeared there was no way to reach the yard, which dropped off in a hill from the back of the house to the Chattahoochee River. It had been left a mess by Colonial Pipeline years before these owners bought. Covered in weeds and impossible to even mow, the owners were desperate for help. Our crew at Angel Landscape Designs managed to get our equipment in and to create three levels of usable lawn, connecting each level with paths and ledger steps. The scope of this project covered the property from the driveway to the river. The owners were thrilled with their new landscape, which they now use constantly.
